HMSA'S PORTLAND HISTORICS JULY 11TH THRU 13TH

AFTER AN ABSENCE OF A FEW YEARS, THE STOCK CARS WERE ONCE AGAIN INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN HMSA'S PRESTIGIOUS PORTLAND HISTORICS AT THE BEAUTIFUL AND CHALLENGING PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY.  THE PARKLIKE ATMOSPHERE OF THIS FAMOUS TRACK, 30+ YEAR HISTORY OF THIS EVENT, AND THE ENTHUSIASM OF THE RACE FANS AND PARTICIPANTS MAKES THIS ONE OF THE BEST EVENTS ON THE SCHEDULE.

21 HISTORIC STOCK CARS ENTERED THE EVENT WITH 19 TAKING THE GREEN FLAG FOR FRIDAY PRACTICE SHOWING THE FANS ALREADY FILLING THE STANDS WHAT THE FORMER NASCAR RACE CARS WERE ALL ABOUT AND DIALING IN ON THE TRACK.  SHOWING EXCEPTIONAL SPEED AT THE OUTSET WERE STEVE SCHOELLHORN IN THE #24 DUPONT LUMINA AND GARLAND SELF IN THE #15 QUALITY CAR THUNDERBIRD.  TOM KLAUER IN THE #2 MILLER GENUINE DRAFT PONTIAC AND ARDIE OJI IN HIS NEW #5 KELLOGS MONTE CARLO ALSO SHOWED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE RECKONED WITH.

FRIDAY NIGHT OFFERED A SPECIAL EVENT HOSTED BY STEVE SCHOELLHORN AND MARATHON COACH AT SALTY'S RESTAURANT ON THE COLUMBIA RIVER.  GREAT FOOD, GREAT FRIENDS, AND PLENTY OF ADULT BEVERAGES MADE THIS A LOT OF FUN FOR THE STOCK CAR PARTICIPANTS AND FRIENDS AND OUR THANKS GO OUT TO STEVE AND HIS ORGANIZATION.  THERE WERE EVEN SOME VERY DESERVED SPECIAL AWARDS GIVEN TO JOHN SCHERRER, RALPH VASQUEZ, AND VIRGIL AND ANNE KIRKPATRICK OF MRO FOR THEIR CONTINUING SUPPORT AND SPECIAL EFFORTS FOR THE STOCK CAR GROUP.

THE WEATHER WAS PERHAPS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WE HAVE SEEN IN PORTLAND AND HMSA PUT ON A FANTASTIC EVENT.  THANKS TO CRIS VANDERGRIF AND HIS CREW.  SATURDAY'S QUALIFYING ROUNDS LAID OUT A VERY COMPETITIVE FIELD WITH LAP TIMES SO CLOSE AND CONTINUING TO DROP SETTING UP WHAT WAS OBVIOUSLY GOING TO BE A VERY EXCITING FINAL RACE ON SUNDAY.  EVERY TIME ONE CAR WOULD SET HIS FASTEST LAP, ANOTHER WOULD BEAT IT AND THIS WENT ON THROUGOUT THE FIELD.  CLOSE AND SAFE RACING WAS THE RULE OF THE DAY AND THE RACE FANS TRULY LOVED SEEING AND BEING ABLE TO BE NEAR AND WITH THE STOCK CARS.

SUNDAY'S MAIN EVENT HAD THE FIELD CUT TO 17 CARS DUE TO A FEW MECHANICAL PROBLEMS THAT PLAGUED SOME OF THE ENTRANTS, BUT THOSE THAT TOOK THE GREEN FLAG PUT ON ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE RACES WE HAVE SEEN RECENTLY.  UNFORTUNATELY A FEW LAPS IN, GEORGE FRASIER AND BRIAN FERRIN HAD CONTACT RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO GEORGE'S #37 AND THE END OF BRIAN'S DAY AS WELL.  THE ENSUING YELLOW FLAG LAPS TOOK AWAY SOME OF OUR RACING BUT ONCE THE GREEN FELL AGAIN, EVERYONE WAS QUICKLY BACK UP TO SPEED AND THE BATTLE AT THE FRONT CONTINUED ALL THE WAY AROUND THE TRACK.  ONCE IT ALL SORTED OUT AND THE CHECKERED FLAG FELL, WE FOUND GARLAND SELF'S #15 QUALITY CAR FORD TAKING THE WIN, STEVE SCHOELLHORN'S #24 DUPONT CHEVROLET IN SECOND, ARDIE OJI'S KELLOGG'S #5 MONTE CARLO IN THIRD, FOLLOWED BY TOM KLAUER IN THE MILLER GENUINE DRAFT #2 AND RALPH BORELLI TO ROUND OUT THE TOP 5.

GREAT RUNS AND GREAT FUN WERE HAD BY THE ENTIRE GROUP THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND AND EXCEPT FOR THE UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT ON SUNDAY, THE RACING WAS CLOSE, CLEAN, FAST, AND SAFE.  THANKS AGAIN TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED, HMSA, OUR SPONSORS, MARATHON COACH, AND THE FANS.  WE LOOK FORWARD TO BEING AT PORTLAND AGAIN NEXT YEAR.
